Transgender Metal Vocalist Danica Roem Wins Virginia’s District Election

Democrat Danica Roem was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates last night (Nov. 7) and made history by becoming the first openly transgender state official elected to office. If unseating Republican Robert G. Marshall who held the position for 9 years, introduced the state's bathroom bill, and once referred to himself as "chief homophobe," wasn't metal enough, Danica is also the singer of a Thrash band. She fronts the Virginia-based band Cab Ride Home, who described themselves as “drunken thrash metal."

“Discrimination is a disqualifier,” Roem said during her victory speech. “This is about the people of the 13th District disregarding fear tactics, disregarding phobias … where we celebrate you because of who you are, not despite it.”

Cab Ride Home released their debut album Crash The Gates in April. Speaking to Noisey, Danica said, "just because I sing in a heavy metal band while spinning my head in circles and getting paid to do it, why can’t I run for government?”
