Pew: Republican Opposition to Same-Sex Marriage Is Crumbling

INJOThe days of the Republican Party championing traditional marriage — and all that entails — might be coming to an end sooner than you think.

Historically, Republicans have fought to keep marriage between a man and a woman. However, for the first time ever, the party is dead split on the issue. In a recent Pew Research survey, a record high of 47% of Republicans favor the legalization of same-sex marriage whereas only 48% oppose it.

In only 2013, these numbers were dramatically different — 61% of Republicans opposed marriage equality and only 33% favored it.

This shift could be a reflection of the generational divide on the issue. The survey also shows that 74% of Millennials are in favor of marriage equality, whereas support declines with older generations. Gen Xers favor same-sex marriage at 65%, Baby Boomers at 56%, and the Silent Generation at 41%.
